How to stop gambling when the urge hits
A gambling urge can feel immediate, but you do not have to make the next decision immediately. Create a short pause, reassess the urge and choose the next step more deliberately.
Feel like gambling right now?
Do not make a forever promise. Give yourself 15 minutes, measure the urge before and after, and see what changes.
Start your 15 minutesA simple pause-before-action loop
- Rate the urge from 0 to 10.
- Create 15 minutes of distance.
- Rate the urge again.
- If it is still strong, repeat the pause instead of rushing into action.
- Use your history to notice patterns over time.
What to do in the first few minutes
Reduce the number of immediate decisions you need to make. Move away from betting apps or websites, avoid depositing money, and give yourself a short period in which your only task is to wait. The aim is not to prove that an urge has disappeared; it is to create enough distance to choose your next action more deliberately.
Why track the urge before and after?
Recording a before-and-after score can help you see whether a pause changed the intensity and whether certain times, situations or triggers appear repeatedly. That makes progress more concrete than relying on memory alone.
